Good Afternoon This & That & Happy May Day

Wow the last day of April already-this was  a month that seemed to go slow as the weather was soooo up and down with temperatures all over the place, rain, and strong winds and storms.  We are cool again now for a few days. I much rather have cooler weather-no need for a/c and the blooms last so much longer too.

I got in some of the seeds I had ordered today, too wet for grass cutting, and my allergies have hit me today-which I find strange with the cooler weather. I am very allergic to oak pollen and that is all over the yard and steps here-so thinking that must be it.

I am not totally enamored with the Royals-never have been, but I have really enjoyed the King's speeches-he is just so "normal" and he seems like he would be a wonderful friend to have. I  love his humor too.

  Was quite impressed with him.

I have been reading several books from authors I hadn't read before-and have enjoyed some really good writing-I will share a few of those soon.

I bought a set of these on Amazon-and love them. Perfect for water for smaller birds and butterflies or can use for small seeds. There were 5 I think all different colors photo from amazon

This time of year we really enjoy the orioles that come by to visit us. We have the bright orange and black colors, some are yellow and black which I am thinking are the females, and there are black ones that are the orchard orioles. I so enjoy seeing them and hearing their songs. So far looks like we have one pair of hummingbirds that seem to be sticking around too. I soooo miss all the hummingbirds we had at the woods house-I went through a couple hundred pounds of sugar to keep all the feeders filled-around a dozen or so of large feeders.

Happy May Day tomorrow   I remember when I was a child growing up, my Mom and I would put together baskets with fresh flowers to share with our neighbors.

.

This photo was taken from here-a tutorial on how to make one

Happy end of April and Happy May Day

  1. I love your little birdbath! Also to have a Mom who made the May Day basket is a clue to why you love doing all kinds of crafts. Colder here in MA!

    1. Hi Barbara-My mother was a master seamstress she made most all of our clothes including my father's suits-she was a perfectionist as well. she also hand dyed her own recycled wool cloth and cut into very narrow strips to hook rugs on burlap-she made a lot of pieces. later years she excelled in quilt making as well we are chilly here in the evenings this week

  3. I've neverheard of a May-day basket. Must be an American thing. But very pretty indeed.
I have fresh tulips on my dining table. They have opened widely. I prefer them not to, but what can I do. They love the light.
Gorgeous little bird bath you have there. That wwas an inspired purchase. I'm sure the birds will enjoy them in the warmer weather.
    Happy May!

    2. This what I found Ancient Roots: The earliest celebrations included the Roman festival of Floralia, dedicated to the goddess of flowers, which featured offerings of flowers.Celtic Beltane: In Celtic tradition, May 1st was Beltane, marking the start of summer with bonfires and nature-themed rituals to welcome fertility.European Customs: Medieval European traditions included bringing in greenery, decorating a Maypole, and crowning a May Queen to symbolize the rebirth of nature.

  4. So glad I have no "spring-allergies"! And yes Charles is a good man - I never thought so before I saw / listened to his speech! He has, like his Dad a good humor!
    Love your water bath!
My Dad used to put flowers over my bed for May 1st. Gosh, miss him.
Happy new moth and hugs to you and the lake.

  6. I am for the most part, anti royal. Well, not anti, just indifferent. But I too did enjoy his speeches.

  7. I have trouble around freshly mown grasses, too. Good luck this spring. I, too, thought the King did a magnificent job here. He presented a very warm, humorous, but on-target address. He had big shoes to fill and I think he is doing an admirable job. He certainly was this week in Washington.

  8. We are having an odd start to May for us weather wise... got down to 45F degrees last night.. and high of only 73 today... very unusual for us here in TX... BUT i'll take it... We got about half the rain they predicted ... but so nice to hear the rain... everything looks and feels washed clean.. Today is a Grandma day for me with the Eldest... she's getting so big.. turning 8 this month..
I'm so sorry you are plagued by your allergies ... i know how that can be.. About a year ago i learned to like honey.. and use it in my oatmeal nearly every morning.. raw and unfiltered and if its not local i at least try to get in from within TX... Maybe its just a placebo effect but i have not been bothered by allergies much in quite a while..
I'm not so sure i was too impressed with the younger Charles .... during his time with Diana... but this older Charles i' am often quite impressed with him, his demeanor and sense of humor.. his quiet strength.. i think him mom ( who i thought highly of too) would be very proud of him..
Love you new birdbaths! I'm on the lookout for cement ones... the ones at the store are so expensive and even old ones people are selling are still expensive... threatening to get some concrete and attempt to make my own.. :) I don't have much shade though... so i'm afraid what i'm really making the birds is a sauna.. and the sun heated water might cook them!!! Take care Kathy... writing you a snail mail letter as we speak... :) Hugs! deb

  10. I love the birdbath, Kathy! Did you get that pink one? I used to have a small birdbath, I used it to put seeds in it. I have no idea what happened to it though. It's probably somewhere in the garden (I should look for it). I'm sorry that ou have problems with allergies - it hits me repeatedly, and then there are weeks that are totally fine. Here in Sonoma County something is always blooming that can trigger an allergic reaction.
I'm not particularly interested in the royals, but I, too, was quite impressed with Charles' speech.
    Have a great May.
