Lots of Rain

Spring has arrived early here in the Ozarks-Missouri.

I did find an opening to do my shopping at Wal mart yesterday rain free. Got everything down the hill and steps into the house before it began to sprinkle rain. So that was awesome. Later last night we got the storms-wind- lightening-thunder-lots of rain--so I am thinking we are closing in on an early Spring.

However, living in this area since retirement sometimes with this early weather-we can get a hard frost or freeze just as things are blooming-not good for some crops. That's Mother Nature though.

Last night into this morning, I have been washing up canning jars getting them ready to fill with more freeze dried foods-I still have #10 cans of peas, green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower that need to get into easier to use containers-so I can use them. I did the dried mushrooms this morning-so after washing and drying more jars-probably later this afternoon can fill up more jars. I did bring several boxes of  canning jars-many different sizes here to the lake. Was hoping for a gas stove by now-as this old electric stove-ugh-won't do for canning. At this stage of my life-I am liking these freeze dried fruits and veggies will be really nice to have around.

I did notice I don't have more wide mouth rings left-when I was canning a lot of our foods I never kept the rings on the jars after they cooled from the canner. For these freeze dried foods I want to keep the rings on- So just ordered some more.

This is my latest puzzle I am getting ready to do. I use jigsaw planet which I really enjoyed-have mentioned them before-love that they have soooo many options-puzzle shapes, puzzle piece sizes, so much to choose from or upload your own photos. Since we are nearing spring-I have been choosing spring type themes This one I just selected-so will set it up by finding all of the borders first.

Enjoy your day

  3. Dear Kathy, I love rain! I am happy that you made it home safely and dry! I don't do online puzzles, but I do them in books/magazines...the Dell and Penny Press ones and there is another one that I forget the name of the company.
I do the mixed ones...so cryptograms, regular crossword puzzles, word game puzzles, etc.
Hugs to you, dear friend. Enjoy your puzzle!

    1. Freeze drying is the way to go-If this was available back when I was younger I would have looked into buying the equipment for it-we produced most all of our food before retirement

  7. How do you freeze dry? I have never heard of it.
Nice puzzle. My late husband used to love doing online puzzles. But I like to do the real thing, on a table by the fire.
    Have a wonderful weekend,

    1. Hi Lisa, I bought fruit and veggies freeze dried from a company online. the equipment for freeze drying is expensive-would be worth it if I was much younger-the produce is soo nice freeze dried.
when I was kid that is what I did too father would get a fire going in the fireplace and we would all work on a puzzle together-good memories
      Happy weekend

  8. Yesterday I opened a small bag of freeze-dried strawberries... eating them was a real treat, so delicious and full of flavor.
I've never bothered to make freeze-dried myself. But now I'm sure it's worth the effort. You're doing a great job, Kathy, for doing it.
I hope you enjoy your new Puzzly! The design is definitely perfect.
    Hugs!
    Lots of love Viola

    1. No I don't freeze dry my own produce-the equipment needed is expensive so not worth it being in my mid "70"s now. I found a company that sells all sorts of freeze dried produce online-sold in #10 cans. I think they service a lot of preppers. as unopened the cans last many years. I am vacuum packing them once out of the can into canning jars-with a jar vacuum sealer for better storage long term

  9. Oh too bad we don't live closer I have hundreds of rings that I would have given you. Glad you go the shopping done. My brother invested in a freeze drying machine and has stores for years. He gave me some staples. Yes, he paid around 5 grand for his machine. I vacuum seal veggies because the so called crisper in fridges just don't keep veggies very long. Have a nice weekend.

    1. Perhaps in a few years the freeze drying machine will be affordable. I had so much trouble all day today getting vacuum sealer to work on my canning jars. I have old canning jars that have very thick glass so perhaps that is the issue. tomorrow will wash more jars.
I agree fresh veggies do not last long in the frig these days.
we have big storms coming tonight-lightening hard rain etc Happy weekend

  10. A rainstorm would be welcome to wash the now dirty snow away, but then we would definitely have a lot of road flooding. Good the errands were done before the rain storms started. I haven’t tried freeze dried fruits or veggies, but can understand why people like them as fresh versions can be costly especially if not used before going “bad.” We prefer either fresh or frozen and I am being careful to use before they spoil and not to over buy.
