My two football teams both lost today-and Mahomes left injured-I was hoping that the Packers would win over the Denver Broncos but one can't win throwing interceptions. These two teams would be a good match in the super bowl though-I remember the last super bowl these teams played each other. I lived in Denver for awhile back when they won the super bowl probably the '80s or late '70s-that was really fun to live in the city that wins the super bowl. They played in the super bowl again when Favre was their quarterback-I was rooting for either team to win haha.
I have never painted with gouache and wanted to try it-the watercolor gouache not the acrylic. I asked one of my slow mail friends about brands and the one she suggested was expensive for me-I don't know what I am doing yet- just playing with paints haha but am saving the brand name for future reference..
My go to is Winsor Newton and I have been happy with their student grade paints-so I found a small tube set on Amazon and since it was such a good sale bought two packages.
These are bolder paints than I am used to so I will play around more to subdue the colors. I almost wasn't going to share this as it is not great especially my little mountain cabin-I will play with that some more tomorrow.
A few yeas ago I started out with acrylic paints-those were too bold too for me I still have those paints as swell.
In this painting, I used gouache, watercolors, and watercolor inks all by Winsor Newton.
(for better viewing click on photos to enlarge)
The bolder colors are the gouache, the little patch of tan is watercolor, and the red flowers and the white flowers in the green mound is watercolor ink.
I used my glass dip pen for the ink. I will go back in tomorrow and do something with the little cabin and add more white ink to the flowers in the grass.
I am thinking since I don't care to have white showing-I need to choose a light paint color to cover the whole page-let dry and then paint. I don't usually have a plan at all when I create. I wanted to play with the new paint gouache and ended up with a mountain looking over a stream.
Have a good night and enjoy your new week ahead.
Happy Monday we have full sunshine and warm up coming in
I played around with above painting a bit to soften the colors
I will be working with gauche again and the watercolors to see what occurs next haha
Happy new week

Very nicely done. I haven't use gouache in a long while. Have fun and create, create, create.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your support
DeleteYour painting is coming along. I never did like painting or watercolor class in school, because I did not like to wait for things to dry to start the next step...even though I have patience, I had no patience for that. I would rather draw. Am always amazed at those who can paint though. You are doing great! Janice
ReplyDeleteSame here about waiting for things to dry. I started to try to paint a few years ago when we moved to the lake house. the sunrises are so beautiful here-I wanted to try to paint them I get frustrated with it as I am very good with it-but since it's fun I keep trying
Deleteooops as I am Not very good with it
DeleteHave fun with your painting. Thanks for your visit and Happy Christmas Kathy.
ReplyDeleteThank you Merry Christmas
DeleteI like gauche and mixing it with watercolors in one piece (not mixing it to make one paint). I like how it's not transparent and really adds some nice details. Have fun painting Kathy. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeletethank you Erika, yes I discovered it is not transparent like watercolors-could make a nice base with watercolors on top
DeleteI like the vibrant colors.
ReplyDeleteThanks-I discovered that is the difference between watercolor and the gauche paint
DeleteNice work!-Christinecmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletethanks a good start with this new to me paint
DeleteKathy what a great way to play. The colors are so vibrant...much brighter than just watercolors. I use Winsor Newton gouache sometimes when I need white hi-lights but also white gesso. Hope you are staying warm...it is freezing here. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI agree fun to play with something new to me, hopefully one day I will be better with painting I just ordered a book on gouache I really have liked winsor newton products
Deletewe were frigid cold last friday and weekend-a little warm up begins today.
stay warm hugs
Looks like you're having a blast painting.
ReplyDeleteI am thank you for stopping by-sorry I have not been visiting as much as I want to lately.
DeleteHi Kathy. That is okay. Really that is okay. I come here because I enjoy what you share and I enjoy reading about you. And there's nothing wrong with not being able to make it out to everyone's blogs, all of the time. It's totally fine. Wishing you a wonderful rest of the year and a fun and yummy, 2026!
DeleteI have thought about getting some paints to play with in the past, your post made me think of getting some again.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I am doing at all-but it is a very fun time to just play and create something-I try not to be too hard myself. I just ordered a beginner book on this medium will help me how to mix colors
DeleteLove your painting Kathy... Your Christmas card coming your way is water color and ink.. I find i like to outline things in ink once i've watercolored.. doesn't feel finished unless i do that .. probably the drawer in me that needs that ... I have no idea what i'm doing either but its fun :) My paints are watercolor by.. Winsor Newton Cotman .. student paints for now.. I got them in the tubes buy one get one free at Michaels about a year ago.. I don't play with them near enough... I don't know why .. because i enjoy it when i do.. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI got your card today-I really love it and yet only one friend has gotten one of my postcards-they were vintage so thinking the worse.
DeleteI love winsor newton too-I follow a mixed media artist on you tube and she highlights with inks, pens etc. too I am going to try that I winsor newtons set of watercolor inks
I'm so glad it made it to you safe and sound... record time really... AND you like it! yeah! I so hope yours makes it to me .. i still have high hopes! :) Hugs! deb
DeleteOh shoot! I missed footy! It´s only slowly coming to Germany and they don´t promote so I forgot, darn it!
ReplyDeleteLove your art. Happy week, hugs to you and the lake.
they will be starting the playoffs soon. Happy week to you as well hugs
DeleteNo Mahomes in playoffs!!! I will miss him! Hoping his knee recovers well ! Hugs! deb
DeleteKathy, the most important thing about painting is to enjoy doing it! I have often wondered about gouache paints, what they are and what they might be used for. After seeing your post, I understand much more, but I still admit I haven’t used them. I can remember times I might have enjoyed the result of using them, so I’m thinking about getting some of those for those times when I was trying for a brighter, less transparent image, than watercolor alone. Your post has been an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteGouache paints tend to be more opaque and not as 'see through' and they don't 'rewet' like watercolor will... :) I've heard many people like to use them but I've never... Hugs! deb
DeleteI have learned that there are different choices for gouache I am working with the watercolor ones-they did reconstitute on my paint pallet the next day the acrylic gouache will not
DeleteI just ordered a book to learn more-and she shows how to mix colors-I am not good at that yet-and I follow an artist on you tube and she was mixing the watercolor gouache colors so they were no long bright and bold but more the way I like too. amazon had a good price on that package of small tubes of winsor newton watercolor gouache
DeleteI learned a lot about the watercolor gouache paint here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHtnKp_eNnc
DeleteWElp... I did not know there were different types of goache... !!
DeleteOoops, not Anonymous, it is from me, Barbara
ReplyDeleteHi Barb
DeleteSo glad you are playing around with the gouache. They can be tricky because you probably have found out your dried paint will re-wet with new paint over it. The best way to learn is to just keep painting. I like the acrylic gouache but the regular is really nice when you get the hang of it. Happy painting!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debra, I still have my acrylic paints I like watercolors better but I may play with that soon too. Loved your latest painting hugs
DeleteKathy i did not think gouach rewetted.... ??
Deleteonly the watercolor gouach Not the acrylic gouach
