Good morning Sunday,
I am so enjoying the cloudy cooler weather-with a little rain thrown in. We missed the bad storms, had some wind last week but not too bad. This weekend it rains a little and stops and then rains a little more.
So this has been the perfect time to work on that area with the chocolate mint take over. Last year I dug out a lot and then it got too hot fast with no rain for me to work on that again. I did a good job as none of that came back-so I got all the roots. Yesterday I dug out a lot more Now I am in the area where perennial bulbs are by the wall and Larry's shallots that his Grandpa brought back from Israel-ages ago-are mixed in with all this chocolate mint..
For a couple hours I dug out more mint and then realized I need to dig up the bulbs-replant elsewhere and then easier to dig out the mint with out hurting the perennials-this will take some time-but I made a good dent in the project. Some of the perennials will go back in front of the wall, but I am also planting them around to fill up areas. With the off and on rain I haven't been able to get back to cutting the rest of the grass.
I lost all of my bee balm plants a couple years ago, so I want to check online for another plant or two-I love those and they can get large and fill in an area. I also need to transfer the ornamental grass down to that hill area we created by the lake. That is a job but I need to get that accomplished soon.
I may go back out after our meal at 2 pm.
I took a couple photos of the area with shallots and the creeping thyme get full of the oak and black walnut leaves-so that is a job as well for this coming week
In the middle is where I transferred some of the perennial bulbs I think these are gladiolas (photos will enlarge just click on them)

You're smart to do the outside work when the weather is nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks with my age now I can't be out in the extreme heat and humidity-we are originally from the northern area of Illinois so this weather here in the ozarks is very different from what we are used to

ReplyDeleteI've been doing a lot of garden clean up too. It's a never ending job, and the weather has a lot to do with it too. I hope you get everything done and that your perennials come back beautifully. Happy new week. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteIt's that time of year for the garden-hugs
DeleteWow, you were sure very busy! Here it´s too cold to start with the balcony (oh I hear you laugh! ;-)...) - have a great new week, hugs to you and the lake

DeleteYou have been a busy little beaver haven't you. It was 73 here yesterday but still to early to remove the leaves here. I usually rake mine up mid May. At my old house my flower paths use to be in chocolate mulch. It smelled heavenly after a good rain. I do think any mint can be invasive even here in the North. I do love it in salads though. Janice
ReplyDeleteI love mint too-but I had forgotten they need to be contained-and we had a water leak from the well so that mint spread everywhere-quite a mess for sure. We will be humid and in the 80's today and tomorrow-and then cools down again so thankful no a/c needed I need to get ours checked too
Deletehappy new week
Can you use a leaf blower on those leaves Kathy? It might help you if you have one.. Does the chocolate mint stay low growing? Maybe it could be considered a ground cover? Everything you've done looks wonderful Kathy.. We've had rain too... Littlest GrandLittle and i made mudpies when she slept over night before last... such fun watching her have fun in the mud.. then i washed her off with the water hose...lol You never know whats gonna happen at Grandmas house...lol Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are a very fun Grandma-hugs
DeleteThis is a busy time in the garden for sure. Good job for taking out the chocolate mint - all mints really can take over easily. I usually plant mint just in pots for that reason.
ReplyDeleteI love mints too-I may grow one in a pot so I can contain it I still have a big section of it to dig out
DeleteReally nice photos. Good job getting the chocolate mint out. I too plant mint in pots.
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch more to dig out but I got worse of it out last year spring
