Good morning friends,
We have full sunshine this morning, lots of boats out there since dawn and we did get more rain last night as well. I welcome the rain here in the Ozarks Missouri area as the structure of the land and soil here-just seems to drink up the water and send it down deep-so different from what I grew up with in northern Indiana with their rich deep soil.
Are any of you still watching Outlander? This will be their final season and I know I will miss it. Have loved this series with the actors, beautiful scenery and awesome clothes too. Years ago I had scrounged the internet and bought all of her books including the Lord John books. I probably mentioned this before but I do love long involved books but these were just too much for me. I had a difficult time getting through them and ended up selling everything on Ebay so I got my money back plus the shipping cost
For me the details were too much which sounds strange as I write this but I just couldn't get through them after the third book. Never did get to the Lord John books. I will be sad to see this series end on the Starz channel. I have enjoyed and loved this series so much. Since I didn't read all of the books am not sure if the series ends with all of her books for Outlander or not? Any thoughts on the books and/or tv series?
Have you noticed how expensive the garden seeds are this year?? I was shocked when I looked at Wal mart's seeds last time I went food shopping. So I went on Amazon and found seeds by Farmer's Almanac and others that had more seeds in their packets at better prices. This year I am buying all sorts of annual flower seeds to really fill in the spaces between my perennial plants-that are looking really good this year. I did lose my perennial bee balm plants a couple years ago, so I ordered online two varieties. The plants are tiny so I have them in one of those big tubs so I can keep an eye on them. Want established they can get quite large with beautiful flowers.
My neighbor friend and I were visiting different garden centers for plants-but the last time I did that-a couple years ago now-I spent way too much on annuals so am not doing that anymore. Seeds are much less expensive. I do love petunias but they don't last here all summer do to the very hot temperatures with less rain-so ended up being a loss of money.
With my back still giving me troubles I won't get my ornamental grass dug up and moved this weekend-this is the perfect time too with all the rain we have been getting.
The older amaryllis bulb with the two offshoots still does not have a flower stem growing-and that usually will show up first. So guessing it needed a break or perhaps getting too old? Need to look that up. The other pot with a younger bulb does have a flower stem.
I am thinking of baking up some pumpkin bread today. I always keep canned pumpkin and sweet potato purees in the pantry. I had purchased awhile back a small can of walnut oil which I think I will use instead of a light olive oil this time in the bake-should add some extra flavor I am thinking to the loaves.
Update: I did just get two loaves of gluten free pumpkin bread into the oven. I used half light olive oil and walnut oil, used swerve brown sweetener instead of sugar, The mix seemed a little thinner than usual so fingers crossed it bakes up ok-I almost added more gluten free flour but decided not to.
Enjoy your weekend!
and hoping you live where you will miss this next round of severe storms We have been missing the worse of these storms that are coming through Missouri
I do watch Outlander. I have enjoyed the series. I can't even look at seeds or plants this year because I can't garden. I'm hoping that next year I will be able to but for now it's too difficult to go into garden sections of the stores. I truly do love gardening and growing my own food. It makes me sad that I have to buy vegetable this year at the store and farmer's market. Both places are very expensive. Glad you got some baking done. I hope all is well there and wishing you a nice day.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, I really miss not having a veggie garden too My Mom was born on a working small farm-so I grew up with most everything grown as well Larry and I did the same and with our own food animals too. I know I will miss Outlander after this ends. I had heard about them doing a Sir John series from her books or a time period during Jamie growing up-haven't read anything more about that Happy weekend
DeleteStay safe! I hope you find out why your older amaryllis is not blooming. Maybe the bulb needs to be broken up/divided.-Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea about the bulbs-thanks I will split them up early fall
DeleteThat pumpkin bread sounds great Kathy. I haven't made any pumpkin bread for quite some time, and like you, I keep a can or two of pumpkin in the pantry. And I got you about seed prices. I dread what the costs of growing plants are going to be this year, but nothing up my way is open yet, not for another week. We've had a couple of nights this past week with temperatures below freezing-still. Have a super week ahead. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteGood morning, my pumpkin bread turned out delicious-I froze most of it-one can makes two large loaves so I bake up two and freeze the bread in halves-and keep one out to eat. I was very surprised at the very high seed prices this year-I got better value shopping online and more brands to choose from as well. I don't have any nursery type places close to us here-only option really is wal mart-so I buy more online now.
Deletesorry you are still getting freezing temps we have been getting close to freezing but it has warmed up this weekend. You have an awesome new week as well hugs
wow off and since above comment was posted this monday morning-can finally post my reply-thanks google
DeleteNever watched Outlander so cannot say anything about this topic. Cannot plant anything until mid to late May around here, but petunias do very well here and I do like them. I do not have very big flower beds here so I just purchase annuals yearly. At my old house I had seed catalogs galore. Good luck with your planting. Janice
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, seed catalogs are so fun aren't they_I don't get them anymore since I do not have a veggie garden I love petunias too but I am realizing they are a waste of money as they don't handle the late hot summers here. I would always buy those larger blooms of petunias-thinking those are really expensive now.. we got lots of rain and t storms last night we can always use the rain here
DeleteThe pumpkin bread sounds delicious, Kathy, and now I am thinking of making one as well because it can be frozen unlike a pie which I usually have made. Canned pumpkin has become costly as well. Years ago when living in VA we grew some pumpkins but they were planted too early and the results were not that good. Patrick usually planted from seeds when we had a veggie garden, except for some veggies like to atoes and peppers.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy pumpkin bread too and since it is mostly me that enjoys it I make it for my and cut the loaves in half and freeze. Larry still has the wheat flour variety in the freezer already. I used to grow pumpkins too-there is a special pie pumpkin seed that tastes better and they are small pumpkins-I do miss not being able to have at a least small veggie garden
