When we moved to Missouri we started getting their conservation 's free monthly magazine. This month most of the magazine was featuring the 100th anniversary on November 2026 of Route 66
Growing up as a child at home my parents often would mention their trip with another newly married couple taking the entire route 66 to California one summer. I think it was partly also celebrating their new marriages and end of the war as well. I don't remember of course but I was one or two years old at the time and I stayed with my grandparents on their farm during their trip. They mailed me lots of postcards during their trip-I think my brother grabbed those one year to keep
If our situation was different I would love to be able to check out some of the activities. Rt 66 goes through Missouri.
Here are a few links if interested
this one is Missouri's historical society
found an official map here
We used to visit Lebanon, Mo when we lived at the woods house-they have a historic hotel that was on route 66
This would make for an awesome travel adventure this year
A cross-country Route 66 trip would be fun, but too intensive for me. I have no doubt there will be some things in the St. Louis metropolitan area that I will take advantage of.
ReplyDeleteYes that would be awesome. with Larry's bad health sadly we are pretty much stuck in the house these days
DeleteI have never been on Route 66, however I did read somewhere that parts of it is now closed to traffic as they no longer wanted to keep it up. I hope I am wrong as many folks might like to travel this historic road this year. Janice
ReplyDeleteOh that would be sad if that is true-had not read anything about that so far
DeleteHappy Anniversary route 66! -Christine cmlk79.blogspit.com
ReplyDeletethat's amazing 100 years
DeleteThis sure made me sad, Kathy. My Mom presented my Brother with a motorcycle trip on Route 66 after he´d finished studying. He never went, fearing his English isn´t good enough. I could hit him for that still! Why I didn´t back then? He only told me years later when he had his first Daughter and it was "too late".
ReplyDeleteOh that is sad-there are lots of motorcycle trips planned for this event on route 66 this year
Delete100th Anniversary? I didn't know that. I must tell my brother-in-law Martin who years ago went on a motorcycle trip along Route 66. He and his wife (and another couple) rented Harley Davidson bikes and had a fantastic holiday. They didn't do the whole route. I think only in California.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisca-that sounds like a fun trip! In the links they are setting up events for motorcycles too
DeleteLike you i think ... I LOVE rode trips.... I wish we had managed to do so much more when hubby's health was better... I don't THINK i have ever been on RT 66... maybe without knowing it? We've made some trips to CA but i think mainly it was like I 10 .. I've always wanted to drive due North and step over the border into Canada... be able to say i've been there...lol My parents honeymooned at Niagra Falls... I'd like to eat lobster in Maine like my Grandparents did.. I'd like to see the Continental Divide.. I once dreamed of visiting every National Park... then life happens and you grab what you can along the way... I really have seen so much... When i saw Pt Reyes National Seashore i actually shed tears.. never thought i would have made it there.. so you never know.. I love how you love Rt 66 and glad they are celebrating it.. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteLarry never was interested in any road trips he had already seen the world before I met him. and he went with his father when he was a boy on a route 66 trip=they did the whole thing.
DeleteI have seen the Niagara Falls and the Continental Divide the Blue RidgeParkway the Shenendoah my Mom planned out a yearly camping trip to see a lot of things-so now I am thankful for her
Mr. M. and I traveled most of the US. Road trips were the best. Now, they are not even on the agenda.
ReplyDeleteyep life changes as we get older-sigh
DeleteWe did parts of Route 66 and stayed in some of those Route 66 hotels. One day I would like to do the entire route, but there are so many things I still want to do. At the moment, gas is just too expensive to go on a road trip.
ReplyDeleteI've been on a short stretch of route 66 in Albuquerque, but that's exciting that it is 100 years old. I'd love to do the entire route one day. I bet it's changed drastically since 1926 though. :) hugs-Erika
