Frigid Weather Has Arrived & Paint Practice

   Good Morning,

Brrrrir we have very cold temperatures here since last night. I am glad I changed my dentist appointment as I don't need to start my very old car when it is in the low teens and I don't need to be out in it either.

Tuesday night I couldn't sleep-I seem to have quite a few of those days, so I finished reading a book, then finished a puzzle on Jigsaw Planet's site and started another Snoopy puzzle-smiles. Still couldn't fall asleep so I decided to start a new practice painting.

I was very happy with this one. I used watercolor paints and ink for highlights. I did it all except for the flower petals on the lily pads.

This morning, I finished it up. I didn't do a great job with the flowers but I am still happy to see the improvements.

I shared this book a couple years ago when I started up learning how to paint and I really love this one. Most of the work is done with inks or watercolor paints. (photos will enlarge just click on them)

Here is the page I chose

When I am not using my own handmade inks, I use Winsor Newton

(if you enlarge these below you can see the details better. Any advice on improving the petals is welcomed

I was quite pleased with most of this painting-perhaps I should paint tired and into the night more often-haha

This week I have been setting up stitching threads, and reminding myself what I have. Had not touched any stitches project really for over 2 years.  So when I did that I uncovered the Sashiko threads and a couple printed pieces to stitch. One will make into a pillow cover -so am thinking of starting out with that piece.

I ordered some variegated DNC embroidery floss at an Etsy shop-so got those on to the cards yesterday-they keep the threads tidy and tangled free. I had purchased for my slow stitch bags-hand dyed embroidery threads, and also was gifted some-but since I needed more I decided to go with DNC threads and I know they are colorfast too over hand dyed.

The post office lost my package of fabrics I had purchased on Etsy-so the seller is sending me out another package. I don't have a lot left in my own hand dyes so am picking up some on Etsy for my bag project.

I have not started the toothbrush rugs yet but everything for that is ready to go.

Another year has gone by to remember 9-11  I was a phone operator at the time-so that added to my memories of that day.

How is your weather this week??

  1. It's cold! I was just out shoveling and sweeping snow. My hands hurt from the cold. I wasn't even out that long. Going to leave the bird feeder out tonight-I don't think the raccoons will be out in this cold!
Great painting-I think you're doing fine.

  3. If you purchase DMC thread the company 123 Stitch sells it for .65 cents a skein. Shipping is 3.50 and then there is tax, but if I need quite a bit, I save money purchasing from them as it is 1.09 plus tax at Hobby Lobby. Your watercolor is looking good! It was 13 degrees here this morning. BRRR Janice

  4. I lie awake most of the night but was too tired to get up. I hate such nights. The moment I think I fall asleep Ingo starts snoring.
Yippee the snow is gone and we´re good in the plus grades, 44F.
Yikes, Monday I have to go to the dentist, too...
Love your water-color-painting, too. To a good night´s sleep, hugs

  5. It's cold here, snow due. I love it that you are painting more. Windsor Newton is very good -- I like their paints. And I really need to get back to it.

  6. Our weather has been lovely... maybe a tad too windy but the GrandLittles battled the wind and rode their bikes... eldest without training wheels... i took her down to the Red Arroyo walking/biking path downtown , better than my short little driveway, where she could really get going... I don't think the training wheels will be going back on... lol We did arts and crafts at Grannys,,, lol then the Dinosaur Museum... I love your 'middle of the night' painting.. :) The flowers..........maybe more water.. more seethru... let that dry then add another light layer until you get it the way you want it.. ?? Sometimes i'll be a little too heavy handed and i'll use the brush to soak up some of it.. or even the tip of a papertowel... But really Kathy its lovely... hope to see more!! I need to pull out my woodburning project which is my next project.. I'm not sure how the board i have chosen is going to accept the woodburning so i'm procrastinating... something i've perfected over the years.. Today is our last warm day... COLD over the weekend but not as cold as YOU!! Hugs! deb

  7. Crafting is a great way to fill those cold days isn't it? Your water lilies look lovely Kathy. And I had one of those couldn't sleep night last night too. I think I should have been more productive like you. Have a wonderful Friday and start to your weekend. hugs-Erika

  8. You are staying busy. 9-11 my daughter had just started college in RI and living in a high rise dorm she called me crying and in a panic they had locked them down. What a scary time for her and us. And mostly for this country.
